BEFORE THE MONSOON

Leaving Walkng Box Ranch

The Great Horned Owls are still with us, as are the feral cats, yesterday a Flicker, and an Ibis pair for my wedding anniversary--the wild animals are reaching a critical mass as we are in final preparations to leave Walking Box Ranch. Living in a mature Joshua Tree forest for the last seven months has spoiled me. It's been so hot during the day that the bunny has lain down with the owl in the oscillating water we run in the afternoons to help hydrate and cool the animals. Its always about water in this high desert. The heat came late this year, the winter was long, then spurts of spring. But life at 4000 feet in the Mojave is even wonderful in these last weeks before the monsoon comes.

I leave this wonderous desert having made a splash with my chocolate pumpkin pie at the Searchlight 4th of July celebration.
